Dimitrov reaches third round in Paris for first time since 2017

Madrid, Spain - April 22, 2024 - Grigor Dimitrov powered to a Grand Slam milestone on Sunday evening at Roland Garros, reaching the third round of a major for the first time since 2017 with a dominant straight-sets victory over Thiago Monteiro.

The 32-year-old Bulgarian, seeded 19th in Paris, was in imperious form as he dispatched the Brazilian world number 74 by a score of 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 in just over an hour and a half.

Dimitrov broke Monteiro's serve six times in the match and hit 24 winners to just 10 unforced errors. He will now face either Alex de Minaur or Fabio Fognini in the third round.

This is Dimitrov's best result at Roland Garros since reaching the semi-finals in 2017, when he lost to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

The Bulgarian has been in good form in recent months, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January and winning the title in Rotterdam in February.

Dimitrov will be hoping to continue his good form in Paris and challenge for his first Grand Slam title.
